To brighten your smile with healthy teeth and gums you will need to pay daily attention to your oral hygiene regimen. Caring for your oral health is just as important as daily exercise and a healthy diet.

Removing oral bacteria prevents gum inflammation from plaque build-up. Plaque, that sticky film coating your teeth and gums throughout the day, releases toxins which can irritate the gums. This early stage of gum disease, or gingivitis, makes the gums swell and bleed whenever you brush and floss.

To treat gingivitis, you will need to step up your brushing and flossing and keeping your mouth free from oral debris which builds up whenever you eat and drink. Also rinsing after with a mouthwash after brushing and flossing helps reduce bacterial plaque and remove any debris loosened while brushing and flossing.

If you have gingivitis and don’t take better care of teeth and gums, it will progress into periodontitis, where pockets form in the gum tissue below the gumline. These pockets trap food particles and plaque and begin destroying the supportive tissue fiber and bone holding the teeth in place. Over time this deterioration will shift and loosen the teeth, and they may fall out. To prevent this from happening, and to brighten your smile with healthy gums, be sure to practice the following:

For Healthy Gums

  • Twice a day, brush your teeth for at least two minutes.
  • Once a day, gently floss between the teeth and below the gumline.
  • Rinse with a mouthwash that is designed to kill bacteria and prevent plaque.
  • Every six months, have a professional dental cleaning to remove tartar (hardened plaque).

Regular dental checkups and cleanings prevent, detect, and treat gum disease as early as possible. To schedule a visit with Dr. Kerry Olszewski and brighten your smile, please call our Mill Creek General Dentistry team in Mill Creek, Washington at 425-337-5549 today!
