Gum disease has two stages. Gingivitis attacks the gums that surround your teeth. Gingivitis occurs when the bacteria in plaque builds up, which causes the gums to become red, inflamed, and sore. Those with gingivitis also experience bleeding in the gums when they brush and floss. Gingivitis can progress to periodontitis. With periodontitis, the infection moves beneath the gums to the bone. Deep pockets form between the tooth and gums, with bacteria and debris gathering in them. This can cause infection. The bone and tissues that support the teeth are attacked. This can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. The symptoms of gum disease include:
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
- Inflamed, sore gums
- A bad taste or bad breath that will not go away
- Receding gums
- Formation of deep pockets between your teeth and gums
- Loose and drifting teeth
- A change in your bite
