If you’re interested in whitening your smile with an over-the-counter whitening product, our Mill Creek General Dentistry team has some helpful information for you! The more you know about these whitening products the better because some systems can harm your teeth and affect your gums. So, to help you know more about each product, Dr. Kerry Olszewski is happy to provide the following information:

Whitening toothpaste
Although each type of toothpaste has its own mild abrasives, whitening toothpaste contains gentle polishing or chemical agents that can effectively remove stains from your chompers. These agents are generally carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide, which are great substances that can lighten a tooth’s color by about one shade.

Whitening strips
Whitening strips are thin, clear products that fit over your teeth and brighten your smile within about 14 days. These strips are coated with a peroxide-based gel, and you should place them over your smile twice a day for 30 minutes each time.

Whitening gel
Whitening gel is a peroxide-based product that is painted onto your teeth with a small brush. Please be sure to follow the instructions on the kit because too much gel can harm your teeth and affect your gums. You should see whitening results within a few days.

Whitening mouthwash
Whitening mouthwash is one of the newer over-the-counter whitening products available. Not only will it whiten your smile, but it will also prevent plaque growth and will freshen your breath. Simply swish the wash in your mouth for about 60 seconds twice a day and you should see results in about 12 weeks.
