Gingivitis, a common form of gum disease, is an infection that attacks the gums and tissues that surround and support your teeth. Gingivitis is caused by the buildup of plaque and bacteria on the teeth and under the gums. If left untreated, gum disease can cause the loss of permanent teeth. If you experience any of the following signs and symptoms, Dr. Kerry Olszewski may recommend treatment for gingivitis in Mill Creek, Washington:
- Gums that bleed easily when you brush and floss
- Red, inflamed, or sore gums
- A bad taste or bad breath that will not go away
- Gums that are pulling away from your teeth
- Deep pockets forming between the teeth and gums
- Loose or drifting permanent teeth
- A change in your bite
If you have gingivitis, our dentist may recommend that you have extra teeth cleaning appointments. Our hygienist will clean all of your teeth of plaque and tartar. In some cases, this is not sufficient, so our dentist will suggest a deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. During this procedure, our dentist will clean all of your teeth of plaque and tartar, all the way down to the roots. Your tooth roots will then be smoothed, which makes it harder for plaque to adhere to them. An antibiotic called ARESTIN® is then applied in the infected areas of your gums. ARESTIN will fight the bacteria long after you leave our office.
